Musical Theatre History Class

Music is a great connector. When I was rehearsing an act of standards, my partner and I would go to Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities and perform our 2 hour show for the residents. My partner and I were just looking to get solid with our show, but something else much more important happened….As we were singing these songs from the 20’s, 30’s, & 40’s to an audience of people in various stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s, I would notice them perk up and sing along with us. After each one of these ‘Rehearsal Performances’ the staff would come to us with tears in their eyes explaining that this or that resident hadn’t spoken for months and how moving it was to watch them sing the verse of a song. At that moment, I knew I was onto something big. I began to research the power of music and its ability to spark and individual’s memory.

Classes:

Musical Theatre History

So, I began to create:

‘Let’s Meet the Gershwins’ (George and Ira Gershwin) &‘

Calling for Cole’ (Cole Porter).

These two classes that I have created for Seniors utilize Mixed Media & Musical Theatre History in an exciting format that promotes Memory and increases Group Involvement.

CURRICULUM: This class curriculum is flexible and is a lively combination of an acting class and a discussion forum in one. Using movies, soundtracks, & librettos of famous musicals, this interactive class focuses on group singing, scene work, and class sharing of personal stories pertinent of the time period.

COST & SCHEDULE: I work with nursing homes and assisted living facilities on class size, schedule, and cost depending on resources, need, and availability.
